Skin Cancer

Take the first step towards receiving care.

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer develops when abnormal skin cells begin to grow out of control. It is one of the most common forms of cancer in the United States and can develop on areas of the skin frequently exposed to the sun as well as areas that receive little or no sun exposure.

There are several types of skin cancer, and they can behave very differently. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are the most common forms, while melanoma is less common but can be more likely to spread if not detected and treated early. Early detection and appropriate treatment can play an important role in achieving successful outcomes.

At Rocky Mountain Oncology Center, we understand how difficult it can be to choose the right team for the treatment of skin cancer. Our goal is to provide advanced treatment options from highly trained professionals in a comfortable, compassionate setting close to home.

Types of Skin Cancer Include:

  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Melanoma
  • Merkel cell carcinoma
  • Cutaneous lymphoma
  • Kaposi sarcoma
  • Other rare forms of skin cancer

Symptoms of Skin Cancer May Include:

  • A new or unusual growth on the skin
  • A sore that does not heal or repeatedly returns
  • A mole that changes in size, shape or color
  • A mole or spot with an irregular border
  • Changes in the color or appearance of an existing skin lesion
  • A pearly, waxy or translucent bump
  • A firm red bump or nodule
  • A rough, scaly or crusted patch of skin
  • A lesion that bleeds, oozes or develops a crust
  • Persistent itching, tenderness or pain in an area of the skin
  • A dark spot or streak that appears different from surrounding areas

Skin changes can have many causes and do not necessarily mean cancer is present. However, new, changing or unusual areas of the skin should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Treating Skin Cancer with Radiation

Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation to target and destroy cancer cells while working to limit exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. Depending on the type, size and location of the skin cancer, radiation may be used as a primary treatment or in combination with surgery and other therapies.

Radiation therapy may be an option when surgery is not appropriate or when removing a tumor could significantly affect appearance or function. It may also be recommended after surgery in certain cases to target remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of the cancer returning.

Your treatment is custom-tailored to your diagnosis, the type and location of the skin cancer, tumor size and individual needs. Your radiation oncologist will review the available treatment options and develop a personalized plan based on established treatment guidelines.

At Rocky Mountain Oncology Center, radiation treatment is carefully planned to precisely target the treatment area while working to minimize radiation exposure to nearby healthy tissue.
