Brain Cancer

Take the first step towards receiving care.

Brain Cancer

Brain and spinal cord tumors are masses of abnormal cells that develop within the brain or spinal cord. Unlike many other cancers, brain tumors rarely spread to distant parts of the body. However, they can grow into or affect nearby brain tissue, which can interfere with important functions controlled by the brain.

Brain tumors may be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous), but both can potentially become serious. Even a benign tumor can grow and place pressure on the brain or spinal cord. The impact of a brain tumor depends on several factors, including its type, size, location, growth rate and whether it can be safely removed or controlled.

At Rocky Mountain Oncology Center, we understand how difficult it can be to choose the right team for the treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors. Our goal is to provide advanced treatment options from highly trained professionals in a comfortable, compassionate setting close to home.

Types of Brain Tumors Include:

  • Gliomas
  • Glioblastomas
  • Astrocytomas
  • Oligodendrogliomas
  • Ependymomas
  • Meningiomas
  • Medulloblastomas
  • Primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphomas
  • Metastatic brain tumors that have spread from cancer elsewhere in the body

Symptoms of Brain Tumors May Include:

  • New or worsening headaches
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Changes in vision, hearing or speech
  • Problems with balance or coordination
  • Weakness or numbness in an arm or leg
  • Difficulty walking
  • Changes in memory or concentration
  • Confusion or difficulty thinking clearly
  • Personality, mood or behavioral changes
  • Unusual fatigue or drowsiness

Symptoms can vary significantly depending on the tumor’s size and location within the brain. Many of these symptoms can also be caused by conditions unrelated to a brain tumor, so new, persistent or worsening neurological symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Treating Brain Cancer with Radiation

Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to target and damage cancer cells while limiting radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. It can be an important treatment for both primary brain tumors and cancers that have spread to the brain from another part of the body.

Radiation may be used to destroy or control tumor cells, relieve symptoms associated with a brain tumor and reduce the risk of a tumor returning. Depending on the type, size and location of the tumor, radiation therapy may be used alone or in combination with other treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy.

Your treatment is custom-tailored to your diagnosis, tumor size, location and involvement. Your radiation oncologist will review the available treatment options and develop a personalized treatment plan based on established treatment guidelines and your individual needs.

Radiation treatment may involve external beam radiation therapy delivered with a linear accelerator. Depending on the individual case, highly focused radiation techniques may also be used to precisely target a tumor while reducing exposure to nearby healthy brain tissue.

Benefits of Radiation Therapy

  • Pain-Free, Non-Invasive Treatment Delivery
  • Personalized Treatment Planning
  • Precise Targeting of Tumor Tissue
  • Designed to Protect Surrounding Healthy Brain Tissue
  • May Help Control or Shrink Tumors
  • May Help Relieve Tumor-Related Symptoms
  • Can Be Used Alone or Alongside Surgery and Chemotherapy
  • Minimal Disruption to Daily Activities for Many Patients
