Breast Cancer

Breast cancer develops when cells in the breast begin to grow out of control. These cells can form a tumor that may be detected on a mammogram or other imaging test, or sometimes felt as a lump. Breast cancer occurs primarily in women, but men can develop breast cancer as well.

It’s important to remember that most breast lumps are benign and are not cancer. Non-cancerous breast tumors do not spread outside the breast and are generally not life-threatening. However, certain benign breast conditions may be associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer. Any new lump or change in the breast should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Types of Breast Cancer Include:

  • Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)

Symptoms of Breast Cancer May Include:

  • A new lump or mass in the breast or underarm
  • Swelling of all or part of the breast
  • Changes in the size or shape of the breast
  • Skin dimpling or irritation
  • Redness, thickening or changes in the skin of the breast
  • Nipple pain or tenderness
  • A nipple that turns inward
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including bloody discharge
  • Changes in the appearance of the nipple or areola
  • Persistent pain in the breast or nipple
  • Swollen lymph nodes near the breast or underarm

 

Many breast changes are caused by conditions other than cancer. However, new or unexplained changes should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Treating Breast Cancer with Radiation

Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to target and damage cancer cells while limiting radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. It is commonly used as part of breast cancer treatment and can help destroy remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of the cancer returning.

Radiation therapy is often recommended after breast-conserving surgery, such as a lumpectomy, and may also be used after a mastectomy depending on the tumor and other risk factors. Depending on the diagnosis and stage of the cancer, radiation may be combined with surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy or other treatments.
