Bone Cancer

Take the first step towards receiving care.

Bone Cancer

Bone cancer is an uncommon type of cancer that begins when cells in the bone start to grow out of control. Cancers that begin in the bones are known as primary bone cancers, and they are relatively rare.

More commonly, cancer found in the bones has spread from another part of the body. This is known as bone metastasis, or metastatic cancer to the bone. Many types of advanced cancer can spread to the bones, including breast, prostate and lung cancers. When this occurs, the cancer cells in the bone remain the same type of cancer as the organ where the cancer originally developed.

At Rocky Mountain Oncology Center, we understand how difficult it can be to choose the right team for the treatment of primary or metastatic bone cancer. Our goal is to provide advanced treatment options from highly trained professionals in a comfortable, compassionate setting close to home.

Types of Bone Cancer Include:

  • Osteosarcoma
  • Chondrosarcoma
  • Ewing sarcoma
  • Chordoma
  • Other rare bone sarcomas
  • Metastatic cancer that has spread to the bones from another part of the body

Symptoms of Bone Cancer May Include:

  • Persistent or worsening bone pain
  • Pain that may be worse at night or with activity
  • Swelling or tenderness near the affected area
  • A lump or mass over a bone
  • Weakened bones or fractures that occur more easily
  • Difficulty moving or reduced range of motion when a tumor is near a joint
  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Changes in mobility or difficulty performing normal activities

Symptoms can vary depending on the location and type of cancer. Bone pain and other symptoms can also be caused by conditions unrelated to cancer, so persistent or unexplained symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Treating Bone Cancer with Radiation

Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to damage and destroy cancer cells while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. It can play an important role in the treatment of both primary bone cancers and cancers that have spread to the bones.

For primary bone cancers, radiation therapy may be used as part of a treatment plan that also includes surgery, chemotherapy or other therapies, depending on the specific type, location and stage of the cancer. For metastatic cancer involving the bones, radiation therapy is commonly used to help relieve pain, control tumor growth and reduce complications caused by cancer in the affected bone.

Treatment schedules vary depending on each patient’s diagnosis and goals. Some patients may receive radiation over several weeks, while others may benefit from shorter treatment courses or highly focused radiation delivered in fewer sessions.

Your treatment is custom-tailored to your diagnosis, the location and size of the tumor, your overall health and your individual treatment goals. Your radiation oncologist will review your available treatment options and develop a personalized plan based on established treatment guidelines and your specific needs.

Benefits of Radiation Therapy

  • Pain-Free Treatment Delivery
  • Non-Invasive
  • Personalized Treatment Planning
  • Precise Targeting of Cancerous Tissue
  • Helps Relieve Cancer-Related Bone Pain
  • May Help Control Tumor Growth
  • Minimal Disruption to Daily Activities for Many Patients
  • Designed to Limit Radiation Exposure to Surrounding Healthy Tissue
